Dipping Into a New World

One of the things I loved about the idea of starting my own college course was getting to schedule a time or day to learn the things I’ve always wanted to take up. The two main subjects I’ve always wanted to learn more about were Music and Film, which I’ve talked about in my past blogs. I can tell you there’s a lot more things on the list like, singing, cooking or even driving. One thing I never thought I would start, was learning a new language. Can you guess what language I chose? Hang-gull or the Korean language! I’d like to blame it all on the CoronaVirus. I’ll give you a brief back story.

It was during the start of the pandemic, and Netflix became my best friend. It was there, my relationship with K-drama ignited once again since 2018. My older sister invited me to learn Korean as one of my classes, which I really loved the idea of since we also started following this Kpop Band called BTS. Long story short, it’s been about almost a year since I started learning Korean and I can tell you that taking on a new language has its challenges; but at the same time it enlightens you.

The start felt like I was dipping my toes into new waters. The top looked scary at first, but once I got in, I could slowly swim and appreciate the beauty of their language. I can tell you I am nowhere near being able to understand yet. I honestly feel like I’ve just scratched the surface, but the process has taught me patience and that if you plan to learn a language or tackle anything, you need to be disciplined.

Giving myself 30 minutes a day to learn and read up a lesson, made me build a habit. Which in turn, made me realize how doing something small, but consistently everyday, builds a foundation. In conclusion, I really love how a simple thing like learning a new language can teach you how to build character, as well as grow in humility, as you learn something new from a world you’ve never stepped into.
