In the beginning, when I decided to start my own PCC I did my best to research the best schools that taught film and looked into their curriculums. I searched through schools from abroad and ones in the Philippines and put them together to compare and see what classes they offered to gauge my curriculum. I took a few ideas from the ones abroad and the Philippines. But one specific class that I noticed most Film schools offered was Film History.
In the beginning, I didn’t see the importance of learning something that already happened and what use would it be in the future knowing all this. But to truly understand something you should be knowledgable about how it all came to be. It’s been a few weeks now since I started my Film History classes and I’ve learned so much. I was mind blown to find out that most of the people that developed the original technologies for the film didn’t even think that movies had a future. It all came about as an accident. It’s amazing to think some things come about when you aren’t even searching for them.
It started from stills to documenting real life, to coming up with creative stories to keep people entertained to developing stories that have messages. I’ve come to learn that studying film is studying people, psychology, society, and technology. It allows the creator to ask the questions, “What do we want? What do we fear, and why? What inspires us?”. So now I see there are many unexpected things you can learn from tracing back to the start and there’s an importance to looking back and see how it all came to be. It's amazing to see how Film has developed to where it is now.
