Have you ever wished there was a way to incorporate the things that you love to do and turn it into a way that earns you money? I made it a point to go back to the drawing board when I realized that I was in the middle of doing something that didn’t bring me happiness. It was only until I was put into this corner of really questioning my passion and purpose, and seeing that if I pushed myself to answer these questions I’d find the key to it all.
I then came across this short talk by Chris Do, entitled “How Do I Know What I’m Good at? - Finding Your Super Power”. This became my guide to figuring out myself and what I am good at. Chris talks about these 5 different prompts: Skills, Happiness, Opportunity, Passion and Service. These 5 prompts are things you should consider when searching to find out what you are good at. It’s in answering these 5 prompts I was able to see, just how powerful and unique a person I am. Here are the deep questions in the 5 prompts that he talked about, that I would love to share with you today!
The first is skill: What are you good at? What are you trained to do? And what is your trade? Second is happiness: What gives you joy? And what do you do just for fun when nobody is watching? Third is Opportunity: What social, economic or political trends in the field are growing right now? Fourth is Passion or Hobbies: What is something you spend hours doing, without realizing what time it is? And lastly, service to others: How do you improve the human condition? Without either of these things, you’ll end up living a life searching for more. So to find the so-called “sweet spot” to these 5 things is somewhere in the middle.
You can create a table for these 5 prompts and start filling them in. After, look at the list you just made for skills, happiness and passion, and pick two or three of your answers, and then answer these simple questions. First, “Can you build an educational model product that synthesizes your interests? Can you build a physical product that synthesizes your interests? And can you build an app or website that synthesizes your interests?
When you start to answer these questions and see that more the areas overlap, the greater your superpower! At first, you’ll certainly be overwhelmed with the results, and feel like those ideas you have are unattainable. But just like Lao Tzu says, “The journey of 1000 miles begins with one step.” All we have to do is start somewhere and you’ll slowly start seeing the life that you want to live and begin heading towards it.
