Melanie Perkins was just a regular professor in a university. She was teaching students how to use design and layout programs. In the middle of it all she noticed that many of her students were having a difficult time learning and adapting to the softwares. It was during this, she and a friend of hers began imagining a future where design was entirely different. They pictured design as a collaborative space, simple, easy to do and was online for anyone. The two friends would never have thought how that dream to solve a problem for their students would turn into a billion dollar business. Melanie Perkins, along with her friend who today is now her husband, are the co-founders of Canva.
A family member of mine, shared this article about Melanie. Reading the article I was surprised to find out that Canva came from trying to solve a problem and in the heart of it all, Melanie and her husband had their students in mind, which shows that the idea came from love. This showed me the importance of the beginning, to recall why you started. It made me reflect and think back to my end-in-mind and because of that, when I get burned out it’s easier to get back up knowing why I started.
