My Own Superpower

I was late to watch the movie Spiderman Across the spider-verse in theaters but I heard it was a movie worth seeing, so my brother and I waited for about a month, and we finally bought a copy of the film. If you still haven’t watched the film, then this is a warning for spoilers ahead.

My review of the film is quite simple. The theme is based on the style of a comic book, when I watched the first movie I was in awe at how intricate each second of the film was. Some shots were so beautiful that aren’t easy to replicate if you are just using a camera. So the level of creative shots easily draws you in as a viewer. The second movie still had the same effect only, story-wise it was different, but that’s not what I want to get into. Don’t get me wrong I love the second movie too but what I wanted to talk about in this blog is a portion of the film that caught my attention.

There’s a scene in the movie where Miles Morales is shown the reality of their worlds and how each Spider-Man in every universe is connected. One of the characters in the movie is Miguel, another Spiderman whose mission is to keep the universe balanced. He explains the world to Miles but only to give him the truth, that Miles became Spiderman out of an accident. Because of him, there’s a world where Spiderman doesn’t exist. You can only imagine what a 15-year-old kid like Miles must have felt hearing that. What he believed his purpose was and what made him who he is, wasn’t even his, to begin with. It devastates him and he ends up going against everyone, running away which leads to more trouble. I’m anticipating and excited to see how the next film concludes this idea of Miles being an “anomaly”, but this idea is what intrigued me.

What if somebody told me the same thing? I’m an anomaly, the life I’m living now, wasn’t mine to begin with. If I was told this years ago I’d probably react like Miles and runaway offended and thinking all the worse possible things. If it was right now I’d look deeper only to find that an anomaly is simply something that deviates from the standard or normal.

After learning the definition I can’t help but take it as a compliment. To me, it would be like having my superpower. That idea in itself excites me! Instead of thinking about what others might have to say about the life I’ve chosen, I decided to take it as my own and live believing in what I consider my purpose. Yes, this life could be meant for someone else. I’ve thought about it but because I chose this walk, I know I’m in the process of creating a pathway for others to take this road on in the future too. Living a life like that, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
