No Harm In Trying

Updated: Oct 10, 2023

I recently had an unexpected experience. Let me explain, there was one day my Dad gave me an idea to email people I admire in the fields I’m interested in and simply ask how they got to where they are now. The idea to me didn’t seem as simple as that for one, my anxious thoughts began to surface thinking, “there’s no way anyone would answer, and why should they care to answer me anyway” negative thoughts started to fill my head and I was hesitant to get on board with the idea but my Dad told me “there’s no harm in trying”. The thought had me pause for a moment, I guess that was true, if I looked at it like that, the idea didn’t seem that scary.

So I began writing and putting together my thoughts and questions, and in the end I sent out to about 16 people with different backgrounds from directing, producing music and more. To my surprise, I received 7 responses!! Their advice and answers were insightful and it allowed me to adjust and work on my course again seeing which things were important to study. Looking back now, I realized just how those negative thoughts would have held me back from receiving great advice and kind words from the people I admire.

The moment I read their responses, I couldn’t help but smile as their words were filled with so much support that it keeps me going now. The experience taught me that it’s alright to recognize your fears but, it’s your choice on how to handle it. I now take this experience to heart and I use it many situations where I become hesitant, I remind myself that it’s alright if I face failure, it comes down to deciding to I choose to get back up again!

Have you ever had a similar experience? You were trapped in hesitation and fear, but you choose to go for it and something amazing happened? I’d love to hear all about it in the comments.
