Play The Fool

I’ve talked about the idea that as creatives, the art that we put out is beneficial to the world; but it’s only recently after watching a Ted Talk by Ethan Hawke, where he talks about allowing yourself to be creative, I’ve come to learn that being creative is an essential part of living and it’s truly how you connect and bless others.

In his talk entitled “Giving yourself permission to be creative” he tackles the idea that most people live their lives not spending it doing what they find is important, and others live their lives wanting to share what they love to the world but, end up giving up because they make the world the judge of what is good or bad, or important or not important in what they do.

Ethan Hawke simply reminds us that we shouldn’t let the world dictate what we believe is good and important. We humans thrive to express ourselves, so being creative manifests naturally in us. When we find out what we love or what we are passionate about, who we are is revealed to us and slowly begins to expand. The process not only heals you but once you share what you’re passionate about, it touches the lives of others.

When we truly give ourselves permission to be creative we simply choose to “Be a Fool”. That’s when we begin to forget what we are actually doing because it is not particularly something good or bad. The idea is to have a childlike mindset. Children throws themselves at anything that allows them to press upon their individuality to you. They don’t care how the drawing looks or how silly the way they dance. They directly show you who they are. The question we need to ask ourselves is this, “Are we spending our lives doing what is important to us?” As Mr. Hawke beautifully ends the talk, “There is no path till you walk it,… so are you willing to play the fool?”.
