Videos Are The Future

Updated: Oct 10, 2023

“Creating and publishing videos is the single most powerful way to experience new levels of financial freedom while impacting the world with your creative career.” A quote by Jordan Orme. I recently had been given the privilege to learn from Jordan Orme, an American freelance music video editor, who had done projects with clients like Justin Bieber, Nike and more. His masterclass guided, and taught me in so many ways, from how to deal with clients, how to network and what important things to think about as a video editor. I wanted to share my 4 takeaways from the class that I believe will aid my fellow video editors out there.

My first takeaway is something I believe my fellow filmmakers ought to know about the market, and that is, videos are the future. If we specifically talk about a platform, Instagram which used to be a place to share photos rather than videos has now become a video and entertainment platform. Jordan shares with us how organic video posts receive 38% more engagements than photos do. It’s no surprise now because we humans connect more with video as it mimics daily life. Videos give off what we see and hear everyday, so communicating messages through video allows the viewer to feel the emotions and the atmosphere of whatever moment was taken.

Which leads me to my second takeaway, tell a story that evokes emotions. When you create a video you always think of the story you are trying to tell. It’s important to figure out what you want the audience to feel or take from watching your video. Jordan shares that we want the audience to have an emotional experience watching our videos, so it’s important to keep that in mind when making your video.

My third takeaway is one that will help those who are looking to build their network. Jordan likes to call this “Making Friends.” You start off by watching as many videos and films as you can. After doing so, take note of those people you admire who worked on those projects you loved. After, DM (Direct Message) them and let them know you are a fan of their work. In the message you invite them out for a cup of coffee or maybe call you, whatever is easier for them. Let them know you want to learn from them, it’s THAT SIMPLE! During the coffee date or call, have a notebook prepared beforehand filled with questions to ask them about their career. This process of making friends will grow your network and you’ll be able to find people to do projects with as well.

My last takeaway is to just START NOW. It’s that straightforward! Jordan tells us the only way to get good at something is to keep practicing and working on it. So keep creating and collaborating in different projects. You will for sure start off with projects that you aren’t happy about but KEEP MAKING! Create videos you love and at the start do it for free! This allows you to build a solid portfolio as you have the options to choose the best projects you’ve done.

THAT’S IT! It’s these 4 takeaways that guide me into the next steps of widening my network, reimagining the way I create videos as well as the importance of what stories I want to tell.
